Learn how to protect with these tips and resources.
- Ensure your computer and mobile device are updated and patches are installed regularly/automatically if the software supports it.
- Maintain an active and updated antivirus software program by scheduling regular scans of your computer in addition to the real-time scanning. Have in mind though, that antivirus cannot substitute common sense.
- Install a firewall on your computer, to add another layer of protection when connected to the internet.
- Require a password to login to your computer/device and prefer to power off the computer instead of using the sleep or hibernation modes.
- Don't let someone you don't know have remote access to your computer.
- Be cautious when receiving suspicious emails, especially with attachments/links. These may redirect you to a different website than their labels indicate.
- Ignore emails which request information such as account numbers, passwords, cards details, etc.
- The bank never sends email to “confirm” your data, account numbers, passwords, etc.
- If you think you may have revealed your personal details contact us immediately on: 800 00 800 or +357 22128000 from abroad.
- If you receive an email or other electronic communication asking you to enter/confirm your BoC personal details, do not reply as it will be fraudulent. Forward them to: email@example.com
- Keep your online banking credentials confidential.
- Never leave them anywhere that someone else can obtain and use them.
- Consider using a different unique password for each site you access, instead of reusing the same password for multiple sites.
- Disable autocomplete and password storage features of the browser.
- Change your password frequently.
- Review and reconcile your transactions history regularly to make sure that you recognize all of them.
- Do not keep your account inoperative for a long time.
- Activate account notifications through email or SMS for certain activities on your accounts in order to quickly notice any suspicious activity.
- Ensure that your latest mobile number is registered with Bank of Cyprus.
- Verify you are providing sensitive information for online banking activities only to websites using encryption (with Https – the ’s’ is for secure)
- Avoid using public computers & Wi-Fi for online banking activities. When retrieving banking information on public computers consider that the information may be stored within the computer’s memory/cache.
- Log out of the online banking application when you finish. Just closing the browser window may not be enough.
- Be vigilant when the website identity button (a padlock) displays warnings or errors. The confidentiality and the integrity of the information provided, is not guaranteed.
- Watch for any pop-up windows asking for your credentials, warning you of a virus or that your virus protection has expired.
- Be ungenerous when exposing personal data to social media. These may be used to guess or reset your password for online banking.
- Access bank’s portals through the official web sites (www.bankofcyprus.com.cy, www.1bank.com)
- Setup a password for your home Wi-Fi, to prevent unauthorised users accessing it. Follow manufacturer’s instructions
Mobile Banking Security
- Configure your mobile device for auto-lock when it is left unused for a certain period of time.
- Avoid leaving your device unattended in public places. Keep it in a secure location.
- Delete the mobile banking application before replacing your mobile device with a new one
- Use the Logout button when your mobile banking activities are complete.
- Download applications only from authorized official app stores. Fraudulent apps are often designed with names that look like real apps.
- Take advantage of the multi-factor authentication solutions provided by the Bank.
- Turn off the Bluetooth function when you are performing online banking activities.
- Avoid rooting/jailbreaking your mobile device to prevent circumventing the security restrictions put in place by the operating system. A malware may take over your phone and make it act behind your back in many ways (i.e. collect personal data)
