Packaged Retail Investment and Insurance-Based Products (PRIIPs)
What are PRIIPs?
Packaged Retail Investment and Insurance-Based Products (PRIIPs) regulation was created by the European Commission and became effective from 1st of January 2018. The scope of the regulation is to provide an extra layer of protection to retail investors in European Economic Area that intent to acquire manufactured products with payoffs dependent on the value or the performance of a different asset or a basket of assets.
As a result, the regulation requires that distribution to retail investors of the aforementioned products to be accompanied by a Key Information Document (KID) that should be provided to retail investors in good time before any transaction is concluded. The KIDs will follow a standardised, comprehensive and clear format, which will assist investors to have a better overview of the characteristics, the risks and the potential performance of such products. Furthermore, the standardized nature of the KIDs aims to facilitate comparisons among similar products that may be marketed to the investors.
